That is the combo that works for me, and that a Honda wrench on this forum uses as well.The only way to either drain or re-fill inverted (VTX 1800) forks is through the large cap at the top. It can get stuck pretty easily so you want to be sure you use a box end wrench or you'll likely round the corners and then really have a problem. Somtimes a little heat is also necessary to get them to release.

Oil Change. Not trying to step on any toes here, the manual is very specific on type of oil you can use on that particular bike. I have the 2003, 1800 R/S. I put synthetic on my first oil change, made the clutch slip. Went back to straight motor oil, had to change it again after 50 miles to flush out the synthetic. PS.
